How Financing Works

When you purchase a vehicle with a loan, a financial institution pays the selling dealer on your behalf; in return you agree to pay back the money borrowed over a specified period of time (typically up to five years). The amount of money borrowed is referred to as the "principal." The amount of money you contribute up-front is referred to as the "down payment" and usually varies from 0% to 20% of the purchase price of the vehicle, motorcycle, ATV or Marine product. You can often purchase a new product without a down payment (if you qualify). The financial institution will charge you "interest" for the use of their money. The rate of interest varies depending on a number of factors such as the amount of money it costs the lender to obtain the money, your credit history, your time on the job, your time at your current residence, and other factors affecting the lender's view of the level of risk your personal situation represents.
